Register to Vote

Registering to vote will vary from state to state. Most states offer online registration. You will want to find your state's election site for details including what kind of ID you will need to show for proof of residency.

Register Online

38 states will allow you to register online. Your
state's election site will typically provide a link
directiing you to register online.



Register By mail

Your state will aslo provide a voter registration form for you to fill out and mail to your county’s election office.



Register In person at a county elections office

You can also visit your county elections office and register
in person with the benefit of having someone to
answer any questions.

Update your Registration

You can update your registration online by mail or in person,
If you have moved, changed your name or mailing address,
or if you want to select or change a political party.

Registration Deadline

Usually you have 30 days prior to election day to register. However 17 states including Washington D.C. will allow same day registration. However there are specific proof of residency requirements for the 17 states that allow same day registration.

You will have the option to register with a specific party. There are reasons to do so given that some states have closed primaries, meaning that only those registered under a certain party can vote for the candidate in that party.

Research which major and minor parties exist in your state and choose whether you would like to identify with any of them.
